In this election year of 2016, one major theme unites major candidates on both the left and the right of the political spectrum: speaking truth to power. Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz both emphasize their ability to do so, and Senator Bernie Sanders rallies people to his campaign with the promise of a political revolution against the wealthy and powerful. And let’s not forget President Frank Underwood, our fictitious president and candidate in the Netflix series House Of Cards.
It was with the presidential politics of the United States playing in the background of my mind that I decided to create a very modern version of Antigone. We titled it Andie.
The story of Antigone is here retold in High Definition digital video. One can only imagine what Mr. Sophocles, the author of the stage play, would think if he were here with us today. And though the digital platform, the means of delivering this timeless story to our audience, is radically different from the wood and stone platform used in Greece a couple of thousand years ago, the message is the same:
There are times when we must speak truth to power.
Everyone involved in this project played multiple roles in front of, and behind, the camera. I am extremely proud of the work done by our students on this project, and grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them all.
